Come to Me: Finding True Rest in Christ
Dear Friends,
Greetings in the name of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ.
During the Second World War, a young soldier returned home after months on the battlefield. He had witnessed terrible suffering, lost close friends, and carried deep emotional scars. Years later, when someone asked what had given him the strength to endure those dark days, he did not speak about his military training or the weapons he carried. Instead, he said, “Whenever I received a letter from my mother, I would read it again and again. Those letters reminded me that someone was waiting for me, someone who loved me, someone who wanted me to come home. They gave me the strength to keep going.”
What sustained that soldier was not the absence of hardship, but the assurance that someone loved him and was waiting for him.
This beautiful story reminds us of the comforting invitation of Jesus in Matthew 11:28: "Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest." In a world where many people feel overwhelmed by the pressures of daily life, Jesus does not simply offer advice or another set of rules. He offers Himself. His invitation is deeply personal: "Come to me."
When Jesus spoke these words, many people were not only physically exhausted but also spiritually burdened. The religious leaders had placed heavy expectations upon ordinary people, making faith feel like an impossible weight to carry. Instead of finding peace in God, many lived with guilt, fear, and uncertainty. Into that situation, the call of Jesus brought hope.
Even today, the call of Jesus continues to bring hope. He does not promise a life free from difficulties, but He promises something even greater—rest for our souls. True rest is found not in escaping life’s challenges, but in walking through them with Christ beside us.
Our world today is just as demanding. We face pressures at work, concerns about our families, financial responsibilities, health challenges, and constant distractions. We are constantly connected through technology, yet many people experience loneliness, anxiety, and spiritual exhaustion. Jesus’ invitation remains unchanged. He welcomes us exactly as we are and gently calls us to place our burdens into His hands.
Jesus also says, "Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart." In biblical times, an experienced ox was often yoked together with a younger one so that the stronger animal carried most of the weight while guiding the weaker one. Likewise, Jesus never asks us to carry life’s burdens alone. He walks beside us, strengthens us, and faithfully leads us through every season of life.
This July, on the fourth Sunday at Rivercourt Methodist Church, Hammersmith, we will gather for our Youth Participatory Service and Cultural Evening. It will be a joyful opportunity to celebrate the gifts, talents, and commitment of our young people as they lead us in worship and fellowship. As they participate in the life of the Church, may we all be reminded that every generation is invited to come to Christ and find true rest in Him. Let us encourage and support our young people as they grow in faith, learning to walk alongside Jesus and sharing His love with the world.
May this Youth Participatory Service inspire us to renew our relationship with Christ, lay our burdens at His feet, and experience the peace that only He can give. As we worship together across generations, may our congregation continue to reflect the gentle and humble heart of Jesus to everyone who enters our fellowship.
May God bless you all.
In Christ's love,
